Mauritius Leads Africa in Global Innovation Index 2025
Mauritius has been named the most innovative country in Africa in the newly released Global Innovation Index 2025, reinforcing its position as a regional frontrunner in technology and economic transformation.
The World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) has recently published the Global Innovation Index (GII) 2025, which ranks 139 economies worldwide based on approximately 80 indicators that measure innovation capacity and performance. The index evaluates two main dimensions: Innovation Inputs (institutions, human capital and research, infrastructure, market sophistication, and business sophistication) and Innovation Outputs (knowledge and technology outputs, and creative outputs).
In 2025, the global top 10 is led by Switzerland, followed by Sweden, the United States, the Republic of Korea, Singapore, the United Kingdom, Finland, the Netherlands, Denmark, and, for the first time, China. Within Africa, Mauritius stands out as the regional leader, ranked 53rd worldwide, ahead of Morocco (57th) and South Africa (61st).
Mauritius Highlights:
- Ranked 53rd globally and 1st in Sub-Saharan Africa
- Among upper middle-income economies: 6th out of 36
- Strongest performance in Market Sophistication (28th), Institutions (32nd), and Creative Outputs (37th)
