Afraid your money might disappear into a black hole? Sent, and then… silence. No confirmation, no way to know where it is. When a transfer crosses borders, that silence shouldn’t be part of the deal. International payments. Nothing left in the dark. Few paintings have unsettled and fascinated in equal measure like Kazimir Malevich’s Black […]
Africa’s Wealth Transformation: The Rise of a Continent — and Mauritius at Its Financial Core
Africa is entering a new phase of economic confidence. As private wealth expands and cross-border investment accelerates, Mauritius is emerging as a trusted financial hub — connecting Africa’s fast-growing economies with the global marketplace.
According to the Africa Wealth Report 2025 by Henley & Partners and New World Wealth, the continent now counts 25 billionaires, 348 centi-millionaires, and over 122,000 millionaires — a striking shift from just a few decades ago. Even more impressively, Africa’s millionaire population is projected to grow by 65% over the next decade, one of the fastest rates worldwide.
The New Geography of African Wealth
While South Africa continues to dominate as the continent’s largest wealth market — accounting for 34% of all millionaires, or approximately 41,100 individuals — it’s joined by other strong performers:
- Egypt (14,800 millionaires), with its diversified economy and strategic connectivity,
- Morocco (7,500), driven by tourism and renewables,
- Nigeria (7,200), maintaining its lead as West Africa’s economic engine, and
- Kenya (6,800), whose tech sector continues to attract international investment.
Together, these five nations hold over 60% of Africa’s private wealth and nearly 90% of its billionaires.
Yet, beyond these established powerhouses, smaller and more agile economies are transforming Africa’s financial landscape — none more so than Mauritius.
Mauritius: From Island Economy to Continental Wealth Hub
According to the report, Mauritius recorded the strongest high-net-worth individual (HNWI) growth in Africa — +63% over the past decade, reflecting its political stability, efficient tax environment, and globally connected financial framework.
The island is now home to approximately 4,800 millionaires, including 14 individuals worth over USD 100 million.
Even more remarkable is the Black River district, which saw 105% millionaire growth over the past ten years and now counts around 1,100 resident millionaires, making it the fastest-rising wealth hotspot on the continent.
For us at MAGMA, this evolution is deeply personal.
As a company rooted in Mauritius and serving clients across Africa and beyond, we see first-hand how financial connectivity fuels growth. Cross-border commerce, investment migration, and multi-market trade all depend on the ability to move capital seamlessly, securely, and efficiently.
The Financial Infrastructure Behind Growth
Africa’s private-wealth expansion isn’t just a story of numbers — it’s a story of infrastructure.
As investors diversify and new capital corridors emerge, the continent needs a foundation of robust, compliant, and frictionless payment systems.
At MAGMA, we enable this foundation by providing secure, multi-currency B2B payment solutions that help businesses and investors transfer value across borders with confidence.
From treasury operations to international trade, our mission is to make financial movement as dynamic and borderless as the continent’s ambition itself.
Africa’s wealth story is one of momentum, innovation, and transformation. And Mauritius — agile, open, and globally connected — continues to show how that story can translate into sustainable growth.
Cross-border payments across Africa are being reshaped in real time. And ahead of the Africa Fintech Summit in Kigali, one question moved to the centre of the conversation: not whether stablecoins will play a role in moving money across the continent, but under whose rules they will do it. In a pre-summit discussion, industry leaders […]
