As the Festival of Lights approaches, the island of Mauritius begins to glow — not just with lamps and colours, but with the shared warmth of community and hope.
This coming Monday, October 20, marks Diwali (also known as Divali), one of the most important and vibrant Hindu festivals, celebrating the triumph of light over darkness, knowledge over ignorance, and hope over despair.
Across the island, preparations are well underway. Families clean and decorate their homes, draw colourful rangoli patterns from rice flour and flowers, and prepare small clay lamps called diyas to light on Diwali night. These lamps, placed along doorways and windows, are believed to guide Goddess Lakshmi, the bringer of prosperity, into homes filled with warmth and goodwill.
A National Celebration of Unity
Although Diwali originates from Hindu tradition, it has become a national holiday in Mauritius, reflecting the island’s multicultural harmony. Streets shimmer with lights, neighbours exchange sweets, and families — regardless of faith — come together to share joy and kindness.
In every village and city, the glow of Diwali reminds us that unity and compassion transcend differences — that light belongs to everyone.
