Pieter Bruegel the Elder’s Tower of Babel (1563) is one of the most iconic visual representations of this legend.

Some facts about Bruegel’s the Tower of Babel:

• In 1553, Bruegel visited Rome. In his Tower of Babel, the Colosseum is easily recognizable, with its characteristic features of Roman architecture.
• Two versions of the painting with this subject have survived, dated 1562 and 1563. However, there were most likely more.
• In the foreground of the painting, King Nimrod is depicted—the ruler who funded the construction of the tower and wished to see it for himself. Some researchers believe that Bruegel is alluding to Charles V, known for his despotism. The kneeling stonemasons beside him, according to some interpretations, further emphasize this reference to his authoritarian rule.
