• One of the biggest mysteries is Mona Lisa’s smile — “The smile of a beauty like a sphinx,” as the poet Théophile Gautier wrote. It appears to change depending on how you look at it.
• Leonardo was able to perceive up to 100 “frames” per second, whereas the human eye typically captures only 20 to 40. This allowed him to depict a dragonfly with its front wings raised and rear wings lowered — a position that people can usually notice only in slow motion. There is also a theory that the Mona Lisa’s smile is not a full smile, but rather the very moment it begins — when the emotional response is already there, but the body is only just starting to react.
• Who is depicted in the portrait? The most widely accepted version is that the painting shows Lisa Gherardini, the wife of Florentine merchant Francesco del Giocondo.
